The 272 Series Cable Railing Kit by Ultra-Tec is specifically designed for use with level-runs in through-post configurations with wood or metal posts only. It features two different cable options and a wide variety of lengths to satisfy the needs of almost any application. The tensioning devices are a pre-attached swaging stud which attaches to a 3½" long Invisiware Receiver through one end post, and a Push-Lock Stud which is threaded into a 2.3" long Receiver on the other end post. With this kit's 100% swageless design specifically made for DIY homeowners, it will completely eliminate the need for expensive professional installation while also making your railing look great!
Swageless fittings are made to be equipped with only the use of hand tools and can easily be installed by hand in the field, unlike traditional cable railings that require the use of a special swaging machine that crimps the fittings onto the cables. Additionally, swageless fittings can be removed and re-used for fixing or replacing the components or posts that the cable run goes through. By using swageless fittings, you eliminate the use of expensive installers and machinery because it can all be done with household tools in a matter of minutes.
Through-Post Configurations are the only mount type that the 272 Series may be used with. This is both the most cost-effective and least visible solution for installing cable runs. This means that each cable will start at one end post and continue through each intermediate post or cable brace until reaching the other end of its run. This configuration should be used when there are dedicated end posts for each run, and are situated so that the back side of the posts are all accessible.

Wood Post Installations
For wooden post installations, a minimum size of 4" x 4" (3½" Sq.) is required to keep the post from bending when cables are tensioned. A top rail is also needed and recommended to be reinforced with a support such as a 2" x 4" on end under the top rail. End posts must also be securely mounted to the deck in order to prevent the post from coming loose while tensioning cables. A bottom rail is recommended for helping distribute the force away from the bottom of the post, however it is not required.
Metal Post Installations
For steel post installation, kits are designed for use with 2-3/8" Sq. tubes. Steel posts will need to have a minimum 1/4" wall in order to handle the hundreds of pounds of tension that is applied once the cables are tensioned. A top rail will also be needed in order to properly distribute the tension. For aluminum post installions, the end posts should be reinforced and it is recommended to use a bottom rail to prevent bowing. Both types of metal posts need to be securely mounted in order to prevent the post from coming loose while tensioning cables.
Intermediate posts (or mid-posts) are to be placed every 48" between end posts. An intermediate post runs from the top rail to the lower mounting surface and is integral for proper structural design. Intermediate posts can be substituted with something thinner such as a 2" x 4" wood post, or an aluminum or steel cable brace. Cables are strung through holes in each post in order to provide support between end posts. Each post hole made should not exceed 3" vertical spacing in order to comply with IBC regulations. When taking cable railing through a corner, do not bend the cable past 45° at any time. If turning 90°, a 2-step turn using a double corner post configuration is required, as illustrated. For wood frame cable runs with up to 90° of turn, kits with single tensioners are sufficient. If going through corners totaling more than 90°, you will want to use a kit with tensioners at both ends.
Corners require two posts because the cable itself, being rigid, will not cooperate in bending cleanly through a single post. When you go through a corner post, you will need to prevent the cable from slicing into the wood as it exits the post on an angle by using a post protector tube.

*In order to comply with IBC regualtions, an intermediate post must be placed every 48" between posts and distance between each cable shall be no more than 3" clear span (for example if you are using 1/8" cable, you would space them 3-1/8" apart), however specific city and state rules and regulations may apply.
